The course is for people who want to learn basic counselling skills in order to develop and enhance the way in which they actively listen and relate to others in their current or future role(s). If you have already completed core skills as part of your professional training please do not apply for a place.
Aim of course: to introduce participants to some of the key skills required when working in a supportive role either in a voluntary or employed capacity. It will focus on 4 principal components:
1. how to use counselling skills ethically and safely in your professional role
2. the importance of the ‘relationship’ with clients; introducing the core conditions (empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard)
3. how to set and manage appropriate boundaries with clients
4. how to use ‘core’ counselling skills effectively through verbal and non-verbal communication (body language, reflecting, paraphrasing, summarising, appropriate questioning)
By focusing on the above components, the training will introduce participants to the core skills and knowledge required when conveying to a person that they are being truly heard and understood.
There will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on their current role and identify ways of using what they have learnt to inform their own working practice.
The course is recommended for anyone who is currently working directly with people and offer emotional support as part of their role and (or) individuals that may wish to pursue a career within the helping sector.
