| Course Description: |

| There may be a time when a child in your care will require First Aid. These basic life |
| Saving skills will enable you to cope safely and confidently with any first aid incident. |
| Giving you the knowledge and confidence to deal with any first aid emergency. |
|
| The course covers: |
|
| Incident management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, choking, dealing with an |
| Unconscious casualty, control of wounds and bleeding, minor injuries and fractures, |
| Burns and scalds, first aid boxes, shock management and meningitis. |
|
| Who the course is aimed at: All early years practitioners and playworkers |
|
| Key skills that are going to be covered (outcomes of training): |
|
| § Accidents - How and why they occur, how they can be prevented, |
| safety in the Child's environment |
| § The first aid kit - contents of the first aid kit, blood loss and shock, |
| burns and scalds |
| § Fractures - How bones break, recognition of fractures, general treatment |
| § Management of the unconscious casualty - recovery position, |
| hypoxia, resuscitation |
| § Causes of unconsciousness - head injuries, foreign bodies, electric shock |
| § Major illness - recognition and management, administration of medication |

| The first aid for child carers course compiles with the current health and safety |
| (first aid) regulations 1981. Successful students receive certificates to show that |
| they are qualified to be first aiders in the workplace. |

| An HSE-approved certificate valid for three years is issued on successful completion |
| Of assessment. |
