COURSE AIMS
To provide practitioners and volunteers with the knowledge and skills to identify and act upon concerns about children, including those who are suffering or at risk of suffering significant harm, in line with "Working Together to Safeguard Children" (2006), and other key legislation and guidance.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
· State their own key learning goals in relation to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
· Identify a range of factors which influence our assumptions and perceptions about individuals, and about child abuse, and how this may impact negatively on practice.
· Demonstrate an awareness of the key policy, guidance and tools that influence how we safeguard and promote the welfare of children and explain their own role, and that of their organisation, in delivering one or more of the Every Child Matters: Change for Children 5 outcomes particularly "Stay Safe".
· Recognise the signs and behaviours associated with different forms of abuse and outline a range of factors which may increase risk or promote resilience in children.
· Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between children who are vulnerable, children in need and children who have suffered, or are at risk of suffering, significant harm; and outline the response route, in a York context, to these concerns including issues of confidentiality and information sharing.
· List the key barriers to disclosure of abuse for children, young people and adults, and the barriers to acting on concerns for practitioners.
· Define their own and their organisations roles and responsibilities, and those of other organisations and individuals, in relation to responding to concerns about a child, demonstrating a clear understanding of the referral process when there are concerns about a child.
